This work is a part of artist Yogesh Ramkrishna’s series titled “Daily Greeds – Mumbai Rituals”. The works from this series are about the Artist’s experience of living in Mumbai – a large metropolis in India. As a student at the Sir J.J. College of Arts, Yogesh spent a good 4 years living and studying in the city. The college, located in the heart of Colonial Mumbai, acts as a sort of an oasis in the hustle and bustle of the old business district. His daily commute to and from the college led him through the different areas of the city and exposed him to the life and rituals of people of different socio-economic backgrounds. This had a profound impact on his practice.
The painting Mumbai Ritual IV is done using watercolor and gouache on paper. This work is a take on the political landscape of the city. He uses the metaphor of a chain of command feeding into corruption and greed of the stakeholders of the ‘ chair’.
Yogesh works with a variety of mediums like oil paintings, acrylics, small sculptures, etc. Most recently he has started combining various printmaking techniques with watercolor, gouache, and acrylic painting techniques. His command over the ‘lines’ in his work is courtesy of this combination of mediums.
The artist lives and works in Vadodara, Gujarat, India.
