Veda Thozhur Kolleri
Veda works with found material and elements that occur in the natural world. She uses drawing, video, photography, writing, and organic material remains to create immersive installations that simultaneously embrace and resist the passage of time. Her work is a rehearsal of loss that manifests as a practice of preserving residues and identifying signs of life in decaying material. Veda’s practice emerges from a space of anxiety centred on loss, that she tries to rationalise using the theoretical and material vocabulary of the organic world. Her engagements are also contextualised ecologically as she gathers material from her surroundings, and through her deep affection for animals.
Elegy is a site-specific installation executed at Shiv Nadar University, Dadri during her second year MVA, in which Veda engages deeply with the tussle between the organic and inorganic constituents of life, through her material conception. The work is centred around the irresistible urge to collect and to preserve traces of the ephemeral. The slow pace of walking, thinking, looking and collecting in and around the University campus, is central to this multi-media installation, wherein the artist’s intervention reflects on the various stages of death and decay of the flora and fauna, that she takes keen interest in observing and documenting. Grass, soil, bones, stone-dust, water, glass and iron stands coalesce with their distinct sensibilities to evoke a sense of decadent loss, to hint at the continuous cycle of degeneration and regeneration, accentuated by the use of handwritten poetic text. Veda’s videos and drawing on display, similarly inaterrogate the silent natural process of death of living organisms and plants and the extant traces of life, in remnants and residues.
