This is another painting by Artist Subrat Kumar Behera from his series Stories from my Grandmother. This particular work has been executed in the year 2018. Here Behera ditches his multi-panel format for a large single panel. This large work 3 and a half feet by 5 feet to be precise is done with water colors and gouache. His command over the application is a testament to his practice and tenacity.
His positioning of the figure of his grandmother slightly off-center lends a sense of importance and visual drama to this painting. One sees an almost surreal use of spaces, where on one hand he creates an architectural platform raised from the ground to be supported by trees in place of pillars and on the other hand across various sections of the painting one sees very real and life like characters performing the daily, mundane tasks pointing to the futility of life.
